Networking Hardware;Windows Server 2012;Internet Protocols
Good morning,
We have a Dell server that is running MS Server 2012. We are running it using a static IP address. All its used for at the moment is to run our SQL database.
We had an instance a few days ago where the server was not responding to any communication attempts. It was working fine up until 10:30pm and then just went incognito. I wasn't able to RDP into it or ping it.
The only fix was for me to switch it over to a DHCP address (which responded OK) and then back to a static IP but this time a different one from the original IP.
Along with a colleague I've checked the event logs on both the affected server and also our DC and can find nothing untoward happening around that time in any of the logs.
Would anyone have any idea why this may have happened and other than the default windows logs, are there any other things we can check to try and track down the issue.
Many thanks in advance

Thanks Matt!
Haven't tried this yet but will check it out. NIC teaming sounds like a plan as well.

You could try to reset winsock...
Netsh Winsock Reset
If you have server, why don't you use NIC teaming? I saw you have two NIC1 and NIC3...use NIC Teaming built in OS Windows 2012, you don't need any special software like BACS in the days before 2012.
How is your firewall configured? Did you play with any GPO objects and settings which could be applied to your server?
If you don't use IPv6, untick IPv6 on TCP/IP properties...

Many thanks

Thanks Sik, we have done this and its the server has been properly registered in DNS on our DC.

...I would open an elevated command prompt and run the following command;
Do this with the static IP address set up.

...then test.

Thanks Duncan.
The issue was first discovered when trying to run a SQL query to the server in question but we don't think this is/was the issue.
The server was on a static IP prior to the issue (192.168.42.3). I rebooted the server and it still wouldnt ping under that IP. I then switched it over to DHCP and it was then contactable. As we didnt want it running on DHCP we then changed it back to a static IP albeit a different one, 192.168.42.147. This also worked fine and the server was fully contactable.
We have contacted Dell and they suggested it could be a 'corrupt ip'. Must say I've never heard of that before. Their recommendation was to update the NIC drivers.
RE: your second post, here is the ipconfig output. We have 4 NIC's on the server but only one is currently in use.
Thanks
Rob

On the case with static IP, please send us output from command of "ipconfig /all" at cmd.exe shell

So just make sure your question, your issue is NOT related to SQL database connection, right ?
Your question is that you can NOT do ping with static IP address but you can do ping with dynamic IP address on window server 2012, Right ?
Please advise
