Topic:
Windows 7;;Virtual Private Networking (VPN)
I am having difficulty setting up a VPN connection between two Windows 7 Pro machines. Neither of the computers are part of a network or domain, they are stand alone workstations.
I have set up the host machine to accept incoming connections and selected the users allowed to access. The machine is behind a linksys router and has a static public IP address. VPN passthrough is enabled for all VPN tunnels on the router. I also forwarded port 1723 to the machine's local ip address.
On the remote machine, I set up the VPN connection with the proper user credentials. When I connect, it appears to find the host and authenticate but I get the error message in the attached image.
Does anything else need to be done on the host machine to configure settings for any of the tunnels? Which tunnel is best for this environment?

Thank you for your comments. I was able to get the RD working through the router but the VPN was still giving me trouble. We're going to give Hamachi a try.

Know issue with releasing settings... wait for 5 minutes and then try connecting.
At least now we know the problem lies in the router settings.

I was able to get the VPN working when the router is bypassed. I connected the computer directly to the modem using the ISP static settings. I will get a new router.
However I am having some trouble after enabling remote desktop. The VPN connected fine, I was able to browse network resources. I enabled remote desktop on the server and connected fine. At that time I had disconnected the VPN connection. When I attempted to connect to the VPN again it failed. I've gone through this several times and as soon as I enable RD, the VPN fails. Is there a problem with connecting to a VPN and then RD on a Windows 7 machine?

Yes the username is compadmin and the computer name is station-k2.
I have updated the firmware as suggested in the article but that did not help.
I also booted to safe mode and still no luck.

In the netstat command the user name is compadmin but you are connecting to station-k2
I hope its the same system.
It is listening vpn port. If you check the ms article it points to router issue
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/319108
applies to windows 7
Post output of tracert and pathping
Can also try booting the host system in safe mode with networking and then try connect...if this works then problem is caused by security software.

Yes I can ping the public IP address.
Antivirus and firewall has been disabled on the host machine and router.
One network card on the VPN server.
Attached are the results of netstat -aon

You can use hamachi,
If you want to use the inbuilt tool then run this command on station-k2
netstat -aon
check whether vpn port is listening...post screenshot. Also check your firewall or antivirus software.

Did you try to ping the public IP of the router from the client system ? Just to ensure that the router is reachable
How many network cards does the VPN server have ? Can you explain the IP schema on the LAN network and integration with the VPN server

Andrew1812,
It did try PPTP as well as L2TP and some others and failed for each. It's just that L2TP was the last one attempted so that is what the error message displayed. It cycled through

If your router doesn't block the port of 3389/RDP ports , it will be okay for RDP on
different network.

It seems that you are connecting using L2TP protocol (from the error message), but you have forwarded PPTP port no 1723 on the router. Try connecting using PPTP on the client.

Thank you for your response.
We are trying to use built in Windows VPN.
I was under the impression that a remote desktop connection could not be established unless the computers are on the same network.
By using VPN that will allow us to share files easily (and possibly printers).
Also I need to be able to connect to the host machine while it is unattended.
