Microsoft Windows Operating Systems;;Operating Systems Network Security
A customer brought a laptop running windows 7 to me the other day, and he wanted me to install windows live mail 2012 on it. When I attemped to do so, it claimed that windows live was already installed an would not allow me to re-install.
Windows live is not found in program features, nor in "all programs". The windows live folder is found in program files folder and also throughout the registry. However when I attempted to manually delete any folder or files, it says that I need permission from trustedInstaller to do so and when I attempted to change permissions to full control everything is grayed out so nothing can be changed.
I also attemtped to delete windows live registry entrees, all I get is "value cannot be deleted or modified" How do I overcome this issue?
I should mention is that I did remove quite a few viruses & malware from the system. I ran Malwarbytes, combofix, and Avast boot scan. The current antivirus program installed is Norton. (I un-installed Avast when I was through with the boot scan)

Sorry I did not close this out and give credit sooner - thank you all for helping me with this issue

Yes, you are right - I momentarally forgot that. But I thought about mozilla thunderbird and that is working fine, so I am using that for my customer and he says that is fine with him.

Agreed.
Remember that Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail are two different apps.

I deleted all the system restore points yesterday to remove any possible infections
I never did see windows mail or windows essentials in the programs & features list, nor in the "all programs" list ever since the customer brought the laptop to me. When the customer brought the laptop to me it had all manner of popups, toolbars and junk on it that I proceeded to remove, then ran scans to remove viruses, and after that, I attempted to install windows live mail. That's when it told me that it was already installed.
I wish now I would have wiped the drive clean and did a re-install, which I am about to do now because I am tired of messing with it. I could have had it done a long time ago.
I tried revo un-installer yesterday and that didn't help either.
I am confident that if I could remove the windows mail entries from the registry I could install windows mail. I have done that before in similar situations. (with windows mail and other programs). But if I can't do that then I think it is time to re-install the OS

I may have given you some bad advice about "takeown" and those posters earlier who advised using an "unlocker" did the same. You should not delete folders that refer to programs still installed. That leaves Registry entries behind. You should only uninstall.
It may be good to run a System Restore to a time before you started to do anything with Windows Live Mail. Hopefully you will restore a proper installation of WLM--with all files and Registry entries. The fact that you have been trying to delete some files and Registry entries may have removed Windows Live Essentials from a listing in Control Panel|Programs and Features.
Now look again for Windows Live Essentials in Control Panel|Programs and Features . Uninstall if you find it. If you cannot find it use Revouninstaller
http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html
And remember, if you have WLM 2011 installed, there really is not much purpose in installing WLM 2012.
If a System Restore does not help, run a Repair Install.

It should not affect personal data or installed programs, but a back up first never hurts.

Windows live essentials is not listed it Programs and features.
I used the "unlocker tool" and was able to delete the windows live and windows mail folders, so that problem is solved.
But when I went back and tried to re-install windows mail, it still claims that windows mail is installed. Seems like it should give me the option to repair but it don't.
I went back into the registry but cannot delete any entries that refer to windows mail or windows live.
Is there a way to change the attributes so I can delete Windows Mail entries? If I could delete them I could re-install Windows Mail.
I did try to use takeown but it didn't work either.

Windows Live Mail is part of Windows Live Essentials. In Control Panel|Programs and Features you should find Windows Live Essentials there. Highlight it and then click Uninstall/Change. Follow the instructions to uninstall only Windows Live Mail.
However, if Windows Live Mail 2011 is already installed, there is very little/no difference in Windows Live Mail 2012, especially when run on Win 7.
If you still need help in deleting a file try the takeown command

Check Task Mgr, there may be a Windows Live Service running. Or you can run msconfig and disable all start ups and all non Microsoft services and reboot and try again.

Easiest way to delete files that Windows won't let you delete is to boot with a "live" distro and simply remove the files. You need to be very careful however that you don't delete something that the system needs to run.
I suggest moving the unwanted files to another folder. That way if something goes wrong you can easily copy them back.

have you tried updating windows live instead of reinstalling, this approach has worked for me in the past on other applications
